Oil sheen spotted near Walnut St. Bridge

Coast Guard officials said they were unable to determine the source of an oil sheen spotted in the Schuylkill at Walnut Street on Monday night, and will resume their investigation Tuesday. Investigators with the Coast Guard and city Fire Department left the West Philadelphia site as darkness fell around 8:35 p.m.

"They are going back out there in the morning, when it's daylight," Coast Guard Duty Officer Thomas Peck said.

"It all could be runoff from cars from the rain the night before," he said. "Who knows? Right now, it appears to be just a rainbow sheen. There is not a lot of [oil] product on the river."

The sheen was first reported to police just before 5 p.m. - Suzette Parmley
