A retired Camden police officer working as a security guard at a check cashing business in the troubled New Jersey city shot and killed a would-be robber Wednesday morning, authorities said.
Josean Torres, 19, also of Camden, and another man knocked down a brick wall on the side of Ben's Check Cashing in an apparent attempt to get into the business, according to the Camden County prosecutor's office.
When someone inside the building heard a loud noise coming from the second floor, which is where law enforcement found the wall was caved in, she alerted the security guard, officials said. At about 9:30 a.m., the guard entered the room and found Torres and another man. Torres allegedly rushed toward the guard and the other employee with his gun raised.
The employee sprayed Torres with a fire extinguisher she was holding and called to the guard, who then fired multiple shots and struck Torres. He died an hour later at Cooper University Hospital.
The other robber fled through the hole in the brick wall and is still on the loose, authorities said.
