Vandals hack digital construction sign in N.J.

Vandals in Upper Township, N.J. reportedly commandeered a digital construction sign over the weekend, replacing its warning message with a profanity.

Vandals in Upper Township, N.J. reportedly commandeered a digital construction sign over the weekend, replacing its warning message with a profanity.

"Saw this driving home yesterday," wrote one Twitter user, who posted a photo of the sign along State Route 49. "Didn't realize my town had changed its name."

The New Jersey Department of Transportation contractor responsible for the sign restored its message Sunday night after residents called to complain, according to a report from NBC10.com.

"Someone was trying to be funny, but I think the operators of the sign need to be more aware of the fact that the security and the access to that information needs to be more secure," Upper Township Mayor Richard Palombo told another local NBC affiliate.

It's not clear whether the sign's control box was broken into or left unsecured.
