Reported drownings at the Jersey Shore this summer

No lifeguards were present in most of the cases.

There have been at least 15 drownings reported at the Jersey Shore since Memorial Day.

June 16:

Belmar: Mitzi Hernandez Nicolas, 13, and Emily Gonzalez Perez, 12, both of Belmar. No lifeguards were present when the two cousins went into the water. The National Weather Service cited rip currents in the deaths.

Atlantic City: Kaliy-ah Hand, 16, and Ramon Quinn, 15, both of Pleasantville. Atlantic City. No lifeguards were present. The NWS cited rip currents in the deaths.

June 25

North Wildwood: The body of a man later identified as Ismail Ahmed Abdelmonem Ismail, 24, an Egyptian, who worked on the Wildwood boardwalk, washed ashore. When and where he went into the water is not known. His death was ruled an accidental drowning.

July 16

Sandy Hook: Bianca Palma, 12, of Elizabeth. Lifeguards pulled her from the surf as the beach was closing down for the day. She died the next day. The NWS cited rip currents in the death.

July 30

Point Pleasant Beach: Zuzana Oravcova, 24, a boardwalk worker from Slovakia. Went swimming at night when no lifeguards were present. The NWS cited high surf in the death.

 July 31

Sea Isle City: Brian C. Zwaan, 58, of Berwyn. Suffered head and neck injuries in the surf and drowned. Lifeguards were present.

Aug. 1

Atlantic City: Jeffrey Wilkens, 31, of Illinois. Disappeared while swimming after sunset near the Steel Pier. No lifeguards were present.

Aug. 2

Sea Isle City: Male, 74. Was knocked over by waves and remained underwater. He died early the next day. Lifeguards were present.

Sept. 3

Wildwood: Hany Mohamed, 35, of Middletown, Dauphin County, Pa., apparently drowned while trying to save his children, who were caught in rough surf.

Sept. 20

Asbury Park: Erin B. Higgins, 42, of Harriman, N.Y., got caught in a riptide while swimming and died the next day at a hospital. A rip current warning was in effect due to Tropical Storm Jose off the coast.

Sept. 23

Long Branch: A 34-year-old man who apparently got caught in a rip current drowned despite efforts to save him.

Sept. 24

Point Pleasant Beach:  Glenn Carrullo, 60, of Waldwick, N.J., died after he was pulled from the surf. He, too, apparently has been pulled out by a rip current.

Seaside Park: Joelle Lanfrank, 44 was pulled from the surf but died despite the efforts of two off-duty nurses to revive her.
