One dead in Chester's 24th homicide of the year

Sunday's deadly shooting follows one on Friday.

A man is dead in what police are saying is likely the 24th homicide in the city of Chester this year, pending autopsy results.

Shortly before 9 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a report of shots fired on the 1400 block of Kerlin Street but found no evidence of a shooting, police said. Shortly after,  police received a call about a shooting victim inside a home on that block, and found a man dead with an undisclosed number of gunshot wounds. Police said he appeared to be in his early 40s but did not release his identity.

Detectives from the Chester and Delaware County District Attorneys Offices are investigating that case, as well as another deadly shooting Friday morning.

In that, police responded to a 7:50 a.m. report of a person down. The officers were directed to the parking lot of the Columbus Elementary School in the 300 block of West 10th Street, frequently used as a shortcut by students making their way to the school. Officers found Zion Abdullah, 16, lying motionless on his back, with an apparent gunshot wound, police said. He was pronounced dead at 7:57 a.m.

Authorities ask that anyone with information on either case call Chester Police at 610-447-8433.
