Police seek gunman in Cheltenham killing

Cheltenham Township police are seeking a gunman who shot a Philadelphia man early Saturday and left him to die on Tookany Creek Parkway. Lt. Joseph Gruver, of the police detective division, identified the victim as Jimmy Schmidt, 21, of East Chelten Avenue. Police were called at 1 a.m. to investigate the report of a man's body between Johns and Ashmead Roads. The victim had been shot several times and was pronounced dead at Einstein Hospital at Elkins Park a short time later, Gruver said. No gun was recovered, and investigators were trying to determine what the victim was doing that night in Cheltenham, Gruver said.
