Rendell signs measure to protect Appalachian Trail

Gov. Rendell yesterday signed into a law a bill that would give municipalities one year to adopt zoning ordinances necessary to preserve the Appalachian Trail.

Municipalities that have not done so yet will get priority listing for state grants, and the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources will help municipalities acquire property in an effort to protect the trail.

Conservation groups say sprawl threatens the trail's natural beauty. The law goes into effect in 60 days.
