Gloucester Twp. girl, 14, drowns in former quarry

A 14-year-old girl swimming in an off-limits Gloucester Township lake that used to be a sand quarry drowned Friday night, officials said. About 6 p.m., police were notified that the girl had been in the water with three relatives when she disappeared. That led to a search with township emergency boats, a state police helicopter, and state police divers, who found the body about 9:30 p.m., police said. "It's a terrible tragedy," Mayor Cindy Rau-Hatton said. "It sounded like they just wanted to have fun, [but] she couldn't swim." Press reports identified the girl as Haja Koroma, a township resident who would have entered Timber Creek Regional High School for ninth grade this year. Signs at the former quarry, off Cross Keys Road near the Lakeside Business Park and upscale Cobblestone development, forbid water activities. - Matt Katz
