Phila. girl, 16, struck and killed by SEPTA train

The 16-year-old girl fatally struck by a SEPTA passenger train late Sunday night was a Philadelphia resident, Cheltenham Township police said yesterday. Her name has yet to be released pending identification by the Montgomery County Coroner's Office and notification of her family.

The R8 Fox Chase train, carrying 18 passengers, was on its last run of the day about 10:13 p.m. when it struck the girl just south of the Lawndale station, which sits on the border of the township and the city, SEPTA spokesman Gary Fairfax said. The accident took place in the area of East Comly Street, west of Newtown Avenue. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim was the 16th person killed when struck by a a SEPTA train since 2006, Fairfax said. An investigation is continuing.
