Shot from barricaded gunman grazes Chester officer

A Chester police officer escaped serious injury yesterday when a bullet grazed his neck during an early-morning standoff with a suicidal man.

Chester police were called to the 1300 block of Clover Street at 4:22 a.m. for a reported suicidal gunman. The man was barricaded in his home and fired on officers as they approached the house, according to the Delaware County District Attorney's Office.

Chester's SWAT team arrived about 4:50 a.m., and was greeted by more gunfire from the house. One shot grazed a team member; he was treated at the scene and returned to action.

The gunman surrendered after 51/2 hours and was held by Chester police. His name was not immediately available; charges were pending, police said. Chester police did not identify the SWAT officer.
