Infant in critical condition from 'savage beating'

A 3-month-old infant is in critical condition at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with injuries Upper Darby police say came from a "savage beating."

On Nov. 24, police were called by the child's babysitter, who alerted them to the injuries. The infant was taken to Delaware County Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Children's. Superintendent of Police Michael J. Chitwood said the baby's skull was fractured, there was severe bleeding on the brain, and three ribs were fractured. He also said there was evidence of prior injuries.

Chitwood said the baby's parents had obtained a lawyer and were not cooperating with police. The babysitter is not considered a suspect, Chitwood said. Police are asking anyone with information to contact them at 610-734-7677. - Mari A. Schaefer
