Free kits for Pennsylvania smokers trying to quit

A limited number of free nicotine replacement therapy kits will be offered to Pennsylvania residents trying to quit smoking through the state's toll-free Quitline starting Feb. 2, the state Department of Health said Friday.

Acting Secretary of Health Everette James announced the nicotine patch giveaway to highlight Determined to Quit Week, which begins today and is intended to educate smokers about the resources available to help them quit.

Those wanting the kit may call the Quitline at 1-800-QUIT NOW (1-800-784-8669). Callers will be asked whether they have any medical conditions that would rule out the safe use of nicotine patches, and must be willing to enroll in a cessation program and set a quitting date. Free phone support can range from three to six sessions. Each kit contains a four-week supply of nicotine patches and related information.
