The Center City Residents Association has presented the Independence Charter School with a historic-preservation award for its renovation of the former Durham School at 1600 Lombard St.

The school, which has 732 students from kindergarten through eighth grade, and the Schrader Group architectural firm received the 2009 Bobbye Burke Historic Preservation Award for the renovation of the 1909 building, which incorporated a new addition.

The award was named for the association's first president, an early advocate for historic preservation in Center City. - Martha Woodall
