An assistant prekindergarten teacher in Tredyffrin Township has been charged with theft of a controlled substance, police said yesterday. John Patrick Tye, 27, of Daisy Lane, Plymouth Meeting, was charged with theft by unlawful taking, receipt of stolen property, and possession of a controlled substance, Tredyffrin police said.

Tye, who worked at Chesterbrook Academy, babysat for a woman who noticed that prescription medication was missing from her Wayne residence, police said. Investigators said that over several months, Tye had removed about 32 pills of Oxycodone, a narcotic painkiller, and Diazepam, an antianxiety medication.

Tye was taken into custody at the academy and arraigned before District Judge Rita Arnold in Downingtown. He was sent to Chester County Prison after failing to post $5,000 cash bail.
