A guard opened fire yesterday morning on a gunman who fled with what officials said was a small amount of money during an armored-car stickup in the Bella Vista section. It was not clear if the bandit, who escaped in a waiting SUV, was wounded.
The robber approached the Brink's guard about 11:30 a.m. as he was entering the Conestoga Bank branch on the 700 block of South 10th Street, said J.J. Klaver, spokesman for the FBI.
The robber grabbed a heavy cash box from the guard and ran north on 10th, spilling some of the loot as the guard fired at him. The bandit jumped into a burgundy-colored SUV with tinted windows, possibly a GMC Denali or a Chevrolet, and sped away.
The gunman was described as a thin black male, 25 to 30 years old, with a long black beard. He was wearing a dark long-sleeved shirt, a dark baseball cap, and black pants that were rolled up above his ankles. - Sam Wood
