An Oreland husband and wife were charged yesterday with embezzling $14,520 from a nonprofit organization that raised funds for the band and chorus at Springfield Township Middle School in Montgomery County.

Kimberly Bray, 37, and James Bray, 53, were charged with theft and conspiracy in allegedly making unauthorized withdrawals from the bank account of the school's Band and Chorus Association. Kimberly Bray volunteered as treasurer of the group, which helped fund student trips and other activities.

Kimberly Bray allegedly wrote 14 checks payable to herself and her husband between October and April. The funds then were deposited in the couple's personal account. The Brays also used association funds to pay for dance lessons and orthodontic services, said Kevin R. Steele, first assistant district attorney. - Kristin E. Holmes
