A cardiovascular surgeon in Bucks County has been sentenced to six months in federal prison for cheating the government out of nearly $350,000 in taxes, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

John Leichner, 65, of Newtown, who pleaded guilty in July, also must pay $349,391 in restitution to the IRS and a $5,000 fine and spend three years on supervised release. He was sentenced Wednesday in Philadelphia.

The government alleged that Leichner and Bernard Bagdis, a Blue Bell lawyer, created corporations to conceal the surgeon's income and assets.

Bagdis and codefendants Bertram R. Russell and Richard J. Frase were convicted in April. The three, who await sentencing, and others concealed from the IRS a total of $24 million in income, federal prosecutors said. - Inquirer staff
