Man charged with murder in death at hotel

A West Philadelphia man was charged with murder yesterday in the slaying of a 28-year-old man at a hotel near Philadelphia International Airport.

Police said Kalif Lewis, 26, met with Tyre West of Hunting Park and West's 28-year-old girlfriend for a "personal encounter" Wednesday night at the Residence Inn by Marriott on Island Avenue.

Sometime after midnight, police said, Lewis tried to rob West's girlfriend at gunpoint. West intervened and was shot once in the abdomen. West collapsed in front of Room 211, where police found him shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday, police said. - Sam Wood
