A Philadelphia police officer disarmed and arrested two men immediately after the Christmas Eve shooting of a cabdriver at 11th and Market Streets, police said.

"He pretty much did an outstanding job," said Police Officer Christine O'Brien. "He got two guys off the streets with guns."

O'Brien said that after being tipped off by a pedestrian, an officer identified only as Officer Deluca approached the suspected shooters, noticed handguns in their pants, recovered the weapons, and arrested Jermaine B. Aikens, 31, and James Allen, 44, both of Philadelphia.

The men allegedly were involved in the shooting of a cabdriver about 9 p.m., O'Brien said. She said the men were charged, but specifics were not immediately available. The cabdriver was shot once in the left shoulder and taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was listed in stable condition. - Matt Katz
