Motorists' cell-phone ban enforced in Harrisburg

HARRISBURG - Police in Harrisburg are now ticketing motorists under a city cell-phone ban.

Police began enforcing the ban on handheld cell phone use behind the wheel on Monday. Fines start at $100 for the first offense and top out at $1,000 for the fourth and subsequent violations.

Police Chief Pierre Ritter said signs would not be posted advising motorists of the ban so officers will use discretion when dealing with out-of-towners. Police issued about 200 warnings in February as they prepared to enforce the ban. - AP
