Man pleads guilty in West Chester student stabbing

A 36-year-old West Chester man accused of stabbing a nursing student in the eye pleaded guilty Monday in Chester County Court. Jeremy D. Miles entered an open guilty plea to charges that include aggravated assault, theft, and related offenses. First Assistant District Attorney Patrick Carmody said that under sentencing guidelines, the maximum jail term is 15 to 30 years in prison. He said he would seek "as much prison time as possible, given the serious nature of the crime," when Miles is sentenced in several months. The incident occurred Dec. 17 when another West Chester University student, at Kildare's bar in West Chester to celebrate the end of the semester, realized her $200 BlackBerry was missing. After calling her own number, she and a male friend went to an arranged meeting site a few blocks away, where Miles, who said he found the phone, had agreed to return it for $30. A scuffle ensued, during which the friend was stabbed with a steak knife, causing him to lose his left eye. - Kathleen Brady Shea
