Juvenile-jail counselor attacked in escape try

A counselor at the city's juvenile jail was attacked Sunday night by three residents trying to escape, city officials said. The counselor, Robert Hickman, was treated for facial injuries after three 17-year-olds forced their way into his office at the Youth Study Center about 11:40 p.m. and stole a swipe card allowing access into a common area, said Everett Gillison, the city's deputy mayor for public safety.

The swipe card would not work to gain access outside the Youth Study Center, which is housed in East Falls. Two other supervisors intervened and subdued the youths, who were being processed on assault charges Monday, Gillison said. - Jeff Shields
