Ex-NFL player gets 2-year corruption sentence

SCRANTON - Former NFL offensive lineman Greg Skrepenak was sentenced Friday to two years in federal prison for accepting a bribe while serving as a Luzerne County commissioner.

SCRANTON - Former NFL offensive lineman Greg Skrepenak was sentenced Friday to two years in federal prison for accepting a bribe while serving as a Luzerne County commissioner.

Skrepenak was found guilty of accepting $5,000 in gifts from a developer seeking public financing of a townhouse project. He must report to prison Aug. 30.

Skrepenak, 40, who played six seasons for the Oakland Raiders and Carolina Panthers, told the court, "I stand before you today a battered and beaten man, but I stand before you a better man. I am so sorry that I allowed myself to compromise my moral and core beliefs."

Federal guidelines called for 33 to 41 months in prison. Skrepenak's attorney asked for a reduced sentence because Skrepenak is a single father of three, has health issues from his playing days, and has made "extraordinary" charitable and civic contributions. - AP
