Several hundred students, teachers, and other members of the Archbishop Ryan High School community gathered at the school Tuesday evening for an impromptu vigil to honor freshman Timothy Connors, killed Tuesday afternoon when he was struck by a car while running across Academy Road to catch a bus after school.

Connors was pronounced dead at Aria Health-Torresdale Campus at 4:10 p.m. His father, Martin, is a Philadelphia police detective, police sources told the Philadelphia Daily News. A teacher had tried to help by administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation, a spokeswoman for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia said.

"Timothy was an engaging student who had come to us from Our Lady of Port Richmond School," Michael McArdle, president of Archbishop Ryan High, said in a statement.

The driver did not leave the scene of the accident, said Officer Tanya Little, a police spokeswoman. The accident was under investigation Tuesday evening. Counselors will be available for students on Wednesday and school administrators will plan a Funeral Mass for Connors, the statement said. - Jane M. Von Bergen
