11-year-old boy stable with gunshot wound in leg

An unidentified 11-year-old boy was in stable condition Saturday night at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia after suffering a gunshot wound to his left leg, police said.

Police received a call about the shooting at 12:54 p.m. Saturday. They responded to the hospital, where the boy already was being treated.

The boy told police that he shot himself at the Vare Recreation Center in the 2600 block of Morris Street in South Philadelphia, police said.

But police are investigating the possibility that the shot was fired at the boy's house. They did not find the weapon at either place and are looking into whether the boy was the one who fired the gun.

"We're fairly confident it didn't happen in the rec center" because no one there heard a shot or saw anything, police Lt. Ray Evers said. Video surveillance at the recreation center also didn't show a shooting.

"There is a good amount of blood to indicate something might have happened in the house," he said.
