A Philadelphia police officer shot a suspect who aimed a 9mm gun at another officer chasing him at 10th and Cumberland Streets early Saturday, police said.
The officers were in a marked car when they stopped a Pontiac Aztek containing two men about 1:30 a.m., Lt. Ray Evers said. The passenger, Joel Bevans, 28, of the 2200 block of Lehigh Avenue, ran off, and one of the officers chased him on foot while the other followed in the patrol car, Evers said.
When Bevans turned around and pointed the gun at the officer giving chase, the other officer fired once and struck Bevans in the side.
Bevans, who was in critical but stable condition at Temple University Hospital, was charged with aggravated assault and weapons and related offenses, Evers said. The driver of the Aztek ran away during the chase. - Kathy Boccella
