Northampton County officer killed; suspect held

FREEMANSBURG, Pa. - A police officer was shot to death Thursday in this Northampton County borough and a suspect was arrested, authorities said.

The shooting occurred in Freemansburg, about 50 miles north of Philadelphia, about 5:15 p.m., the Allentown Morning Call reported.

Northampton County District Attorney John Morganelli said Thursday night that the officer had died and that authorities were still piecing together what had happened. The newspaper identified the officer as Robert A. Lasso, 31, a seven-year police veteran and the father of two children.

The suspected gunman was apprehended, authorities said. - AP
