Morning fire destroys Swarthmore business

An early-morning fire Saturday destroyed a deli in Swarthmore and badly damaged an upstairs apartment, officials said. No injuries were reported.

The fire at the Countryside Deli in the 500 block of Yale Avenue was reported around 6 a.m. Flames spread to an attached apartment occupied by four people, who escaped.

The Red Cross is assisting them with food and clothing.

They had found alternative temporary housing, spokesman Dave Schrader said. - Allison Steele
