A 24-year-old Pennsylvania state trooper was in serious but stable condition Thursday night after a vehicle struck his patrol car on Route 1 in Chester County, authorities said.

According to state police, the trooper was monitoring traffic from the highway median in New Garden Township about 1 p.m. when a vehicle driven by Heather DeLong, 47, of Glen Mills, left the roadway and struck the trooper's patrol car near the driver's door.

Rescue workers freed the trooper, who was flown to Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

DeLong, who was uninjured, was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle, and related offenses. She was unable to post bail, set at $200,000, as of Thursday night and was being held in the Chester County Prison. - Anthony Campisi
