A Bensalem man was in custody Friday on charges that he assaulted his 3-month-old son, allegedly shaking him when the child would not stop crying.

Kyle Hinkle, 25, of the 1500 block of Virginia Avenue, was charged Thursday with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child, both felony counts, and related offenses. He was being held in the Bucks County prison after failing to post 10 percent of $50,000 bail, according to a news release posted on the police website.

On Oct. 12, Aria Health-Torresdale Campus alerted authorities that an infant was in the emergency room with head trauma, police said. The boy was transferred to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, where he remains and is expected to recover, police said.

Hinkle told police, according to the statement, that he was unable to stop his son from crying, so he shook him up and down multiple times without supporting the infant's head. - Diane Mastrull
