Marcus Hook mayor convicted of charges related to drunken encounter

MARCUS HOOK Mayor James "Jay" Schiliro won't be lighting up a victory cigar anytime soon.

Schiliro, 39, was convicted in Delaware County Common Pleas Court yesterday on five charges in connection with a bizarre encounter that unfolded in his house Feb. 21.

A 20-year-old man, who had long known Schiliro and described him as a father figure, said he was summoned to the mayor's house late that night for a chat.

Schiliro allegedly plied the man with wine and offered to perform oral sex on him, the Daily News reported earlier this year.

When the man refused, Schiliro allegedly pulled out a 9 mm handgun, fired a shot into a wall and talked about taking the man hostage.

Schiliro was found guilty of recklessly endangering another person, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, official oppression and selling or furnishing liquor to a minor, according to court records.

His bail was set at $100,000, and electronic home monitoring was ordered to be set up at his house by Monday, the records show.

Psychiatric, psychological and psychosexual evaluations of Schiliro were also ordered, according to the records.

The Delaware County Daily Times reported yesterday that Schiliro will be sentenced Jan. 13.

The ex-boilermaker showed up for a court hearing related to the case in March, looking confident with a cigar protruding from his mouth.

He initially said that he intended to run for re-election, but later abandoned the idea.
