HARRISBURG - Pennsylvania Adjutant Gen. James Joseph resigned Friday, nearly two months after the Wolf administration abruptly announced he was going on leave without citing a reason.

Joseph, who headed the Pennsylvania National Guard and the state Department of Military and Veterans' Affairs, went on paid leave from his $137,392-a-year post in mid-January.

In announcing Joseph's resignation Friday, the governor also did not say why the adjutant general had stepped down.

Joseph went on leave after several legislators received an anonymous letter asking for an investigation into his actions while at the helm of the department.

WITF, the public radio station in Harrisburg, first reported on the anonymous letter last month, saying it alleged sexual harassment.

Wolf spokesman Jeff Sheridan would not comment on the letter or even confirm its existence.

Wolf appointed Joseph in January of last year. Before that, Joseph had served as an assistant adjutant general for the Pennsylvania National Guard and headed the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency under former Gov. Ed Rendell.

The administration said Friday that Deputy Brig. Gen. Anthony J. Carrelli will continue serving as interim adjutant general.
