Conservative truckers say they will shut down D.C. Beltway, seek arrest of elected officials

They might be the most unusual interest group in Washington D.C.'s long history of wide-ranging political action coalitions, described by the Southern Poverty Law Center as "a group of politically right-oriented long-haul truckers."

And they are apparently going to utilize their most valuable asset — 18-wheelers — to swarm the U.S. capital during a three-day protest this weekend, starting Friday and ending Sunday. Thus, ironically, they will shut down a city already in the midst of a shutdown. How? By gathering "three lanes deep" on the D.C. Beltway, also known as Interstate 495.

According to their website, Ride for the Constitution, they may actually begin their public protests in the small Pennsylvania town of Gilberton to support controversial, machine gun-firing former police Chief Mark Kessler at a town hall meeting.

"The momentum is now unstoppable," the group said in a message on its website. "The American people will be heard between now and well into the weekend of October 11."

The group, which according to the Southern Poverty Law Center [SPLC] is headed by a former country singer named Zeeda Andrews, describes its main goal as re-establishing constitutional law in America that they believe has eroded under the current political leaders.

The main culprit in their eyes is not a surprising pick.

"Long before he was president, Barry Soetoro, aka Barack Obama, was already plotting with others, to overturn the Constitution for the United States," the website says.

The protest on I-495 will reportedly begin Friday morning.

One organizer, a trucker from Georgia named Earl Conlon, told U.S. News and World Report Monday that "everybody that doesn't have a supporter sticker on their window, good luck: Nobody in, nobody out."

The sticker Conlon refers to must contain "T2SDA," which stands for "Truckers to Shut Down America."

SPLC argues that the problem with the conservative group's mission is that it has no mission — other than seeking the arrest of President Barack Obama and all of Congress.

"The only aspect of the planned protest that is clear is that it is fueled by conspiracy theories regarding President Obama and fears about an imminent economic collapse," SPLC said in a statement Tuesday. "And it is being promoted by antigovernment 'Patriots' and radio-show hosts with a history of far-right agitation."
