Dozens of Bernie Sanders delegates crowded into a tent set up for media outside the Wells Fargo Center as actors Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover and Rosario Dawson held an impromptu press conference.
They came, they said, to support Nina Turner, the former Ohio senator and Bernie Sanders stalwart, who reportedly was removed from the Convention speakers' list after she refused to endorse Hillary Clinton. Many of the Sanders delegates wore stickers bearing the hashtag #imwithnina.
As media crowded around, taping dozens of microphones to a precarious stand, Sarandon waited for Dawson to arrive. "It's like the Lord of the Rings trying to get to the mountain over here," she quipped.
"We stand in solidarity with [Turner]. It was a very upsetting incident and it shouldn't have happened," said Sarandon. She added that she is leaving the Democratic Party.
Dawson said she had witnessed [Turner's exclusion] firsthand. "They called her at the last minute saying we don't want her on the stand. We can't heal unity like this. She's the strongest advocate for the revolution."
