COATESVILLE The Coatesville police are taking tips by text message through a smart phone application that allows detectives to have two-way communication with sources.

"We'll say, 'Do you know what color the car was?' and they can text back anomously with additional information," Coatesville Police Department Chief Jack Laufer said.

The Tip411 application, available for Android and iPhone, can also be used to send messages to users on inclement weather or criminal investigations.

"Our thought process was to try to take advantage of the different technology that's out there for a generation that has grown up with smart phones," Laufer said.

He stressed that the application is not meant to replace 911 or be used while a crime is ongoing.

The application can be downloaded at the Google Play store or iTunes or by visiting the police department's Facebook page or website at coatesvillepolice.org.
