Heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms drenched the Philadelphia region Monday, flooding some major roadways and snarling traffic.

While the heaviest rain has left the region, the National Weather Service has issued flood warnings for parts of the area and at the Shore.

The rain was blamed for a series of car accidents during the morning rush hour.

Flooding was reported on the Schuylkill Expressway and Interstate 95 in Philadelphia. Route 38 in Cherry Hill was closed after water collected under a railroad bridge. Flooding at 33rd Street and Girard Avenue prompted SEPTA to halt trolley service between 26th and 40th Streets, substituting shuttle buses instead. Service on NJ Transit's RiverLine was suspended between the Walter Rand Transportation Center and the waterfront in because of street flooding.

About 30 flightswere canceled at Philadelphia International Airport, and officials there were advising passengers to check with their airlines for flight-status information.

The high temperature will be near 62 degrees in Philadelphia, the weather service said. In total, half to three-quarters of an inch of rain was expected.

The weather service says most flooding deaths occur in motor vehicles. Drivers should turn around when encountering flooded roadways.
