A 61-year-old woman was rescued from a vehicle that crashed into the Schuylkill late Tuesday afternoon north of the Philadelphia Zoo, police said.

Shortly after 5:15 p.m., emergency responders were dispatched to the 2300 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard, where the vehicle was found submerged 20 feet from the west bank of the river, said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

A passing rower helped the North Philadelphia woman out of the water and she was transported by medics to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where she was listed in stable condition.

"We don't know if it was an accident or if it was intentional," Small said of the vehicle plowing into the water.
