Andrew J. Fox, 43, of Villanova, a company vice president and a fund-raiser for melanoma research, died of the disease Sunday at home.
Mr. Fox earned the nickname "Superman" for his size - 6-foot-3, 250 pounds - and he had a license plate that read MNOVSTL (for Man of Steel). His personality matched his physique, his brother, Robert, said. Mr. Fox was a "street-smart, people person" and a savvy salesman, he said.
In the last year, Mr. Fox raised funds for melanoma research while struggling with the disease. Two weeks ago, he and his family presented a check for $25,000 to the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania. He did not want just to raise funds for research, said his wife, Bonnie Brandeis Cook, he also wanted to help children of melanoma patients go to college.
"His courage and desire to help others were the true attributes of Superman," his brother said.
For three years, Mr. Fox had been a partner with Kay & Sons, a window-treatment and wall-covering company in Norristown. Previously, he co-owned a wall-covering company in Bridgeport for 10 years. He was thrilled when he got the contract to provide the wall-treatments for the Eagles club boxes and the owner's box at Lincoln Financial Field, his brother said. He was an Eagles season-ticket holder.
He was a graduate of Harriton High School in Rosemont, where he played baseball.
In addition to his wife and brother, he is survived by sons Zachary and Brandon; a daughter, Allie; his father, Donald; and sisters Shirley, Audrey, and Susan.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Main Line Reform Temple, 410 Montgomery Ave., Wynnewood. Burial will be in Roosevelt Park, Philadelphia.
Memorial donations may be made to Friends of Andrew J. Fox Melanoma Fund, Abramson Cancer Center, 3535 Market St., Suite 750, Philadelphia 19104.
