John J. Kilcullen, 59, of Lansdowne, a retired nursing administrator and decorated Vietnam War veteran, died of kidney failure Saturday at Delaware County Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Kilcullen graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School in Drexel Hill and earned a bachelor's degree in history from St. Joseph's University.
From 1969 to 1971, he served in the Army and completed a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was awarded a Bronze Star for "initiative and sound judgment" in combat.
Following his discharge he worked in the insurance industry. After deciding on a career change, he completed the nursing program at Albert Einstein Medical Center in 1978 and later earned a master's degree in health administration from St. Joe's.
For more than 15 years, Mr. Kilcullen was an emergency-room nurse at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center and for 10 years he was a nurse manager at Inglis House, a wheelchair community for younger adults in Philadelphia. He was infection-control coordinator at Inglis when he retired 31/2 years ago.
He enjoyed the beach and boardwalk in Ocean Pines, Md.
Mr. Kilcullen is survived by his wife of 34 years, Frances Heron Kilcullen; a daughter, Katie; and three brothers.
