Richard B. Whitman Jr., 59, of Devon, an engineer, died of lung cancer Friday at home.

Mr. Whitman graduated from Conestoga High School and earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Temple University. While still in college, he and two partners established SRD Race Cars in Malvern, designing and building chassis for race cars. After selling his share of SRD in 1981, he joined Valquip Corp. in Malvern. Since 1999, he had been with Tri-State Technical Sales Corp., a distributor of industrial equipment.

Mr. Whitman was a longtime Republican committeeman in Easttown Township and chaired the Easttown Republican Committee for more than seven years until 2004.

He coached his daughter Julie's soccer team, and he and his wife, Sandy McGinnis Whitman, renovated their home in Devon. He did much of the work himself, she said, and streamlined the design of the interior of the home, which was built in 1924. There was nothing he couldn't fix, she said. He and his wife enjoyed vacations in Jamaica.

In addition to his wife of 28 years and daughter, Mr. Whitman is survived by a son, Richard III "R.B.," and a brother and three sisters.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Luke Lutheran Church, Conestoga and North Valley Forge Roads, Devon. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Alleva Funeral Home, 1724 Lancaster Ave., Paoli. Burial will be in Good Samaritan Cemetery, Paoli.
