Joseph E. Cardwell, 54, of Media, a produce manager and youth sports coach, died of cancer Sunday at home.

Mr. Cardwell started his 38-year career at Acme supermarkets as a teenager. He was a produce manager at the Acme in Devon when he became ill two years ago.

He was a graduate of Penncrest High School in Media, and earned a bachelor's degree from North Carolina Wesleyan College, where he met Linda Daley. They married in 1976.

Mr. Cardwell coached basketball for the Media Youth Center; coached for the Rose Tree Soccer Club and for the Media Petticoat Softball League; and coached soccer at the Springton Lake Middle School from 2003 to 2005.

He and his family volunteered on Habitat for Humanity construction projects in North Carolina.

He enjoyed the Jersey Shore, history, music, Guinness beer, and Republican politics. He was the judge of elections for the Borough of Media.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Cardwell is survived by daughters Megan, Sarah, and Kelly; his parents, Frank and Jane Cardwell; and a brother.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Media Presbyterian Church, 30 E. Baltimore Ave., Media. Friends may call from 10 a.m. at the church and from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Rigby Harting & Hagan Funeral Home, 15 E. Fourth St., Media.
