Herbert T. Scheuren, 70, of Harleysville, a retired principal at Cornwells School in Bensalem, died of a heart attack Wednesday.

Mr. Scheuren became ill while doing yard work in Collegeville at his sons' company, Construction Service International, where he had worked since retiring from Cornwells in 1989.

As a child, he had rheumatic fever, which caused heart problems, his daughter Bonnie Miller said, and 16 years ago, he had a heart transplant. Six years ago, he had a liver transplant after contracting hepatitis. Despite his medical problems, he had to be useful, his daughter said. "He couldn't sit still," she said.

A native of Ashland, Pa., Mr. Scheuren earned a bachelor's degree from Bloomsburg University and a principal's certificate from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.

He taught fifth and sixth graders in Bensalem schools for 21 years and then was principal at Cornwells for 14 years.

Since 1960, he had been married to Catherine Rupp Scheuren, a former secretary at Cornwells.

He loved cars, his daughter said, and worked as an auto mechanic in the summers when he was a teacher. He was a member of the Langhorne Gun and Rod Club and the Boulder Valley Sportsman's Association in Sumneytown.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Mr. Scheuren is survived by sons Herbert and David; his stepmother, Jacqueline Klees; three sisters; a brother; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Advent Lutheran Church, 470 Landis Rd., Harleysville. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. at the church and from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow at Williams-Bergey-Koffel Funeral Home, 667 Harleysville Pike, Franconia. Burial will be in Old Goschenhoppen Cemetery, Woxall.
