S. Eugene Coben, 80, an orthodontist who was one of the founders of the graduate orthodontics program at Temple University in 1958, died of cancer Saturday at his home in Meadowbrook.

S. Eugene Coben, 80, an orthodontist who was one of the founders of the graduate orthodontics program at Temple University in 1958, died of cancer Saturday at his home in Meadowbrook.

After graduating in 1944 from Olney High School, Dr. Coben earned a degree in 1949 in dentistry from Temple. The next year, he was a dental surgeon for the U.S. Public Health Service in Cleveland.

In 1952, he earned a master's degree in orthodontics from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Dr. Coben joined the Air Force in 1952 and was captain of the dental corps in Anchorage, Alaska, until 1954.

Dr. Coben married Rhoda Nydick in 1958, and they raised three children.

He opened a practice in the mid-1950s in Jenkintown and taught at Temple after founding the graduate program. He retired from Temple in 1994 and closed his practice in 1997.

Dr. Coben was honored several times, including with the Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Orthodontic Teachers and Research Award from the American Association of Orthodontists in 1996.

In addition to his wife, Dr. Coben is survived by sons Robert and Michael; a daughter, Amy Gamburg; six grandchildren; and a brother.

Services and burial were Monday.
