Raymond Lohier, 71, of Wyncote, a family physician in Elkins Park for 28 years, died of complications from pancreatitis Monday at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

Raymond Lohier, 71, of Wyncote, a family physician in Elkins Park for 28 years, died of complications from pancreatitis Monday at the Penn Presbyterian Medical Center.

A native of Haiti, Dr. Lohier cared for many patients from his homeland. He was a pillar of Philadelphia's Haitian American community, his son Patrick said, and served his patients with compassion.

Dr. Lohier earned a medical degree from the State University of Haiti, interned at Christ the King General Hospital in Verdun, near Montreal, and completed a residency in surgery at Maisonneuve Hospital in Montreal. There he met a nurse from Haiti, Flocie Charles. They married in 1965.

Before establishing his family practice in 1979, Dr. Lohier was chief of geriatric services at Delaware State Hospital in New Castle and was a staff surgeon at John F. Kennedy Hospital in Philadelphia. He was associated with Albert Einstein Medical Center and Elkins Park Hospital.

For 20 years, Dr. Lohier served in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. He retired as a colonel in 1999.

He enjoyed gardening and classical music.

In addition to his wife and son, he is survived by another son, Raymond Jr.; a brother; and three grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. today at St. Luke the Evangelist Church, 2316 Fairhill Ave., Glenside. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. today at the May Funeral Home, 354 N. Easton Rd., Glenside. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham.
