Galina Dzhugashvili, 69, a granddaughter of Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin who challenged widely accepted accounts of her father's internment at a Nazi prison camp, has died.

She died Monday at Burdenko military hospital in Russia after a struggle with cancer, acting hospital chief Vladimir Nekrasov said.

Her father, Yakov, was a Soviet senior lieutenant who died at the Nazis' Sachsenhausen camp in 1943 after Stalin declined to swap him for a captured German general. The circumstances of his death were unclear.

In 2003 in Moscow, a U.S. official presented Ms. Dzhugashvili with documents that a U.S. military official said indicated her father was shot trying to escape. - AP
