Mary Neary Furlong, 93, of Broomall, a retired teacher, died Tuesday of a stroke at Broomall Presbyterian Village.

Mary Neary Furlong, 93, of Broomall, a retired teacher, died Tuesday of a stroke at Broomall Presbyterian Village.

Mrs. Furlong earned a teaching certificate from West Chester State Teachers' College, now University. She then taught elementary school in her hometown of Mount Carmel, Pa., and later taught in Maryland.

During World War II, she was an inspector for textile mills in Philadelphia and met a textile company manager, Maurice C. Furlong. They married in 1949.

After their son, Maurice Jr., was in school, Mrs. Furlong earned a bachelor's degree from West Chester and for 12 years taught fourth and sixth grades at Harris School in Collingdale. She retired in the late 1970s.

In addition to her son, she is survived by two sisters and two brothers. Her husband died in 1998.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Pius X Church, 220 Lawrence Rd., Broomall. Friends may call from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at Frank C. Videon Funeral Home, 2001 Sproul Rd., Broomall. Burial will be in SS. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Marple Township.
