George G. FitzPatrick, 79, of Abington, a funeral director for more than 50 years, died of emphysema Monday at Abington Memorial Hospital.
George G. FitzPatrick, 79, of Abington, a funeral director for more than 50 years, died of emphysema Monday at Abington Memorial Hospital.
Mr. FitzPatrick opened his funeral home in Abington in 1954. Previously he worked with his father in the funeral home his grandfather established in 1904 on Broad Street in Philadelphia.
He had great empathy for grieving families and was very kind, said his wife, Patricia Reinhart FitzPatrick. Their son Stephen now operates the funeral home.
Mr. FitzPatrick was a past president of the Abington Lions Club and bowled on its team. He ran the parish drawing and the Catholic Charities drive, and headed the ushers organization at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Abington.
He was a graduate of Germantown Academy and the former Dolan's Mortuary College in Philadelphia. In his youth, he sailed competitively at the Jersey Shore and met his future wife at a beach party in Ocean City. He was a lifelong Eagles and Phillies fan.
In addition to his wife of 55 years and son, Mr. FitzPatrick is survived by another son, Geary; daughters Susan Cyliax, Amy Loughling and Megan Judson; a brother; a sister; and 13 grandchildren. Daughter Karen Polise died in 2000.
A Funeral Mass will be said at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, 1500 Marian Rd., Abington. Friends may call from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the FitzPatrick Funeral Home, 1500 York Rd., Abington. Burial will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham.
