John Keyser Knorr III | Physician, 92

John "Bud" Keyser Knorr III, 92, formerly of Gladwyne, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Lankenau Hospital for 32 years, died Tuesday at Dunwoody Village, a retirement community in Newtown Square.

Dr. Knorr joined the staff at Lankenau in 1951 when it was in North Philadelphia. After Lankenau moved to Wynnewood two years later, he helped found its Health Education Museum - featuring Pandora, a talking skeleton - and conducted classes for expectant parents.

"He had a real gift for people," his daughter Betsy Payne said. "His patients and the nurses adored him."

Dr. Knorr's ancestors settled in Pennsylvania in the 1690s. His father and grandfather were physicians. After graduating from Radnor High School, he earned a bachelor's degree from Dartmouth College and a medical degree from Thomas Jefferson University. During World War II, he served in the Navy Medical Corps in the Philippines.

After his discharge, he completed a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Pennsylvania Hospital and remained on the staff there for several years.

Since 1939, Dr. Knorr had been married to Elizabeth Walker Knorr. He enjoyed golfing at Philadelphia Country Club and taking annual vacations with his wife to Penobscot, Maine.

In addition to his wife and daughter, he is survived by two grandsons and two great-granddaughters.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church, where Dr. Knorr was an elder, at 625 Montgomery Ave., Bryn Mawr.
