James J. Hagan III | Insurance adjuster, 84

James J. Hagan III, 84, of Haverford, an insurance adjuster and father of nine, died of heart failure Friday at Little Flower Manor in Darby.

Mr. Hagan graduated from Haverford High School. During World War II, he served in naval intelligence. After his discharge, he earned a bachelor's degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

In 1947, he married Mary Frank Hagan, whom he met on a blind date. The couple raised a daughter and eight sons in Haverford. They loved entertaining and dining out, their son Michael said, and enjoyed wintering in Longboat Key, Fla., and traveling.

Mr. Hagan was an insurance adjuster for many years for W.E. Miller & Son in Bala Cynwyd. After retiring as a senior partner in 1994, he joined Hagan & Associates, an insurance adjusting firm in Havertown operated by his sons Michael and Paul.

In addition to his sons, Mr. Hagan is survived by sons James IV, Thomas, Stephen, William, John and Christopher, a daughter; Ann, 19 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. His wife died in 2002.

A Funeral Mass will be at 11 a.m. today at Our Mother of Good Counsel Church, 31 Pennswood Rd., Bryn Mawr. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, West Conshohocken.
