H. Gilroy Damon Jr. | Engineer, 81

H. Gilroy Damon Jr., 81, an engineer, died of cancer Monday at his home in Springfield, Delaware County.

Mr. Damon graduated from Nether Providence High School. During World War II, he served in the Army as a surveyor for a field artillery unit in the European Theater and later was a cook at an Army base in Texas.

After his discharge he earned a bachelor's degree from Drexel University at night while working for the engineering firm his grandfather founded in 1894. He eventually became president of the firm, H. Gilroy Damon Associates, in Sharon Hill. The company's projects included Dover Air Force Base and portions of Interstate 95. It was the engineering consultant for a dozen suburban municipalities.

Last year, Mr. Damon received a lifetime achievement award from the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers. He continued to work every day until October, said his son, David, who is now president of the firm.

Mr. Damon was a Mason and a life member of the American Congress on Surveying and Mapping.

He enjoyed cooking and his vacation home in Beach Haven, N.J.

In addition to his son, Mr. Damon is survived by a daughter, Cynthia MacDonald; sons H. Gilroy III and Thomas; two sisters; a brother; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. His wife of 52 years, Betty Ann Dilworth Damon, died in 2000.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Media Presbyterian Church, 30 E. Baltimore Ave., Media. Friends may call at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Chester Rural Cemetery, Chester.
